Pizzeria Buurman & Buurman, which currently has one branch in the city, will expand in a westerly direction from 1 September. The new branch will open on the first day of autumn in the former café Westend on the corner of Kraneweg and Friesestraatweg.
“We both work at Neighbor & Neighbor on the Red Road. We see that the pizzeria is running very well so that we regularly have to sell no. And because everyone who works here is very involved in the business, the owners Douwe, Sjoerd and Anouk have given us the opportunity to start something ourselves at a new location. A kind of extension of the Buurman & Buurman family, so to speak”. These are the words of Sam van der Zee (28) and Jene Bons (30) the new owners who are now busy renovating to get everything ready on time.
The shop clearly shows that it has been a café for seventy years. “You can see the old woodwork, original wooden floors, bar lamps and of course the stained glass windows. And outside, right on the corner, a small piece of paneling from café Westend," says the smiling van der Zee. According to the two owners, they definitely leave these original typical cafe things intact.
Famous cheesecake
“We are a restaurant, but we do want to explore whether we can also regain the function of a neighborhood café or meeting place in the future. In any case, everyone can always continue to have a drink after eating the pizza, salad, antipasti or our famous cheesecake. We think it would be nice if people from the neighborhood would join us for a drink, wine or beer. But we are primarily a pizzeria”, says Bons while she is busy sanding a door right next to the bar.
Terrace
There will soon be room around the building for five spacious patio tables with chairs. From next spring, that number will be increased to ten. “Because we are at this open intersection, we always have sun for a long time. Really delicious”, says Bons.
Opening
“The opening party is on Friday 31 August. To top it all off, we have a performance by Guilty Bangers† They themselves say Guilty as OJ and more scared than Rob de Nijs. That promises to be another great party. And, of course, on Saturday 1 September, you'll get to work with 200 free pizzas, of course from our own unique stone oven.”, concludes van der Zee.
