Hotels, restaurants, snack bars and cafes generated 2,6 percent more turnover in the third quarter than in the previous quarter, CBS reports. Turnover rose in particular in restaurants, cafes and snack bars. The volume, the number of drinks and overnight stays also increased. Compared to a year earlier, the catering industry achieved a record growth of 8,8 percent.
Restaurants and cafes biggest increase
Restaurants and cafes saw the strongest increase in turnover at 3,5 and 3,4 percent respectively. Growth in both sectors was also higher than in the first two quarters of this year. Cafés, including eateries and coffee shops, have never achieved such a strong increase in turnover. In contrast to the other catering sectors, the sales (volume) of cafés are still lower than before the crisis.
Snack bars, including lunchrooms, fast food restaurants, meal delivery companies and ice cream parlors, increased their turnover by 2,7 percent in the third quarter. Fast food chains and meal delivery companies in particular recorded more turnover than in the previous quarter.
The turnover growth for hotels was 0,2 percent less strong than for the other branches and the growth was also less than in previous quarters.
Record turnover growth catering industry
Compared to the third quarter of 2015, turnover in the catering industry increased by 8,8 percent. The hospitality industry last achieved such a turnover increase in the first quarter of 2007. Snack bars, at over 13 percent, recorded the largest turnover increase compared to last year. The sellers of fries, sandwiches and other snacks have never achieved so much growth.
On average, prices in the catering industry were 2,7 percent higher than one year previously. The volume grew by an average of 6 percent.

The turnover of the catering industry increased again in the third quarter of 2016. In the third quarter, turnover increased by 8,4 percent compared to the same quarter a year earlier. It is the largest increase since the third quarter of 1999.
Employment and the number of starters also increased. Business confidence remained strong.
