The Hague, 8 June 2021 – Enterprising Netherlands is increasingly coming into operation. This also applies to the catering industry. For entrepreneurs and self-employed persons with children, this may have consequences for their childcare allowance. Because changes in your life, such as income or childcare hours for your child, affect how much benefit you receive. That is why the Tax and Customs Administration/Benefits is calling on entrepreneurs and self-employed persons to check their details for the childcare allowance and to change them if necessary.
Check your data
The childcare allowance is an advance. How much allowance you receive each month depends on your expected situation. For example, how much you expect to earn this year. And how much and what kind of childcare you plan to purchase each month. At the end of the year, it is calculated how much allowance you were actually entitled to, based on your actual situation. If it turns out that you have received too much allowance, you must repay it to the Tax Authorities/Supplementary Benefits. You will still receive an allowance that is too little.
An eventful year
5 tips for checking & changing
• Download the Childcare Allowance app. This gives you an overview of your data at all times. And you can immediately change common changes, such as in income or childcare hours. Would you rather not have an app or do you have a change that you cannot pass on via the app? Then log in with your DigiD on Mijn Toeslagen via surchargeen.nl to check and change your details.
• Check with the calculation tool whether your estimated annual income is still correct. Now that you are further in the year, you have a better idea of your expected income. Has your income changed? Change it immediately via the app or My Allowances.
• Do you have doubts about your income? Better estimate too high. By estimating higher, you reduce the chance that you will have to repay the supplement at the end of the year. Because the higher your income, the less benefit you will receive. Be aware that stating a higher income can also have consequences for other allowances, such as your healthcare allowance or rent allowance.
• Put a reminder in your calendar for each quarter to check your data for the childcare allowance and change it if necessary. For example, make it a habit to immediately check after your quarterly VAT return whether you need to change anything for your allowances. Do you have an allowance partner? Don't forget to report changes in his or her situation as well.
• Are you ceasing your business? Let us know immediately via My Allowances. You are then entitled to childcare allowance for at least another 3 months.
A lot can happen in a year, both professionally and privately. By regularly checking your details and immediately reporting changes in your situation, you reduce the chance that you will receive too much or too little benefit. check allowances.nl/kinderopvangtoeslag for more information and examples of changes that affect your allowance.
