They call it the living room of Groningen: Werkman, on the Grote Markt. 'Eating, drinking, dancing, working is our slogan,' says manager Marvin Legebeke. And all that with a good dose of sobriety and, above all, no-nonsense. With the enormous glass wall, the building cannot be missed on the renewed market. Right opposite the Town Hall with a terrace where many Stadjer sometimes sit down for a drink.
Artist Werkman
The name comes from the Groningen printer and artist Hendrik Nicolaas Workman. And this also breathes the case. Inside on the wall you will find details of his artwork. This style is also carried through to the house wines and coffee service. Warm contrasting colors make the place feel cozy and like home.
Workstations with a view
And that homely atmosphere is exactly what you are looking for if you want to work outside the home, but in an inspiring environment. Several workplaces have been created on the top floor with extra sockets. So if you no longer have an office, you can go here. And while you're there, you don't have to miss anything. Coffee, tea, lunch or a good glass of wine, everything is available. While you are hard at work and can sometimes stare outside for when inspiration is lacking.
Everyone's friend
The map calls Legebeke a 'everyone's friend, with a side trip here and there'. Carpaccio, various sandwiches, baked salmon, sole and grilled watermelon are on it. But also some more standard dishes such as a hamburger or a steak. 'For the tourist who sometimes passes by', says Legebeke.
According to Legebeke, the absolute runner is the Egg Hemingway. A classic starter with salmon, brioche bread, Hollandaise sauce and truffle.
'Slightly different'
Workman is not the only terrace on the Grote Markt, so it is important to distinguish yourself clearly. They do this by using a Josper in the kitchen. That is a kind of barbecue that gives certain products such a typical smoky taste. The use of brands other than the neighbors also means that Werkman is slightly different from elsewhere.
Label
But Legebeke also finds etiquette very important. 'Everyone should be able to be themselves with us, including the guests. That's where it starts. I think it's important that all guests are addressed as 'you' and that we keep the door open for them, especially in winter. Also grab glasses at the bottom, serve from the right, walk everything on a tray and put a napkin under a cocktail. That completes the Werkman experience.'
Werkman is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, a DJ plays from 20.00:41 in the evening. Restaurant Werkman is located at Grote Markt XNUMX in Groningen. More info Werkmangroningen.nl
