Last Saturday, fourteen cities were dominated by the Night of the Tip. On this day, 521 bars, restaurants and entertainment venues donated their tips to five small-scale and sustainable development projects under the motto 'Keep the change, Change the world'. In the cities of Amsterdam, Breda, The Hague, Eindhoven, Enschede, Groningen, Leiden, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Utrecht, Wageningen and Zwolle, the city turned blue and donations were generous. After doubling this amount by Impulsis, a supporter of private initiatives in development cooperation, an amount of at least 75.000 euros was raised.
In the fourteen cities, about a hundred students organized various activities to draw attention to the Night of the Tip. The national opening took place in Leiden this year. An exhibition was held in the Hartebrugkerk with works by Fred Mutebi, an artist affiliated with Children of Uganda. A flash mob painted the Koopgoot in Rotterdam blue and the Domplein in Utrecht formed the backdrop for many performances in the sun.
The proceeds from 2014 will benefit five projects in Africa and South America. Children of Uganda ensure a better diet for children by setting up 'school farms'. CooP-Africa improves the mobility of Kenyan farmers by providing a bicycle on credit. This gives these farmers better access to the market and the bicycle can provide another source of income. Niños de Guatemala (NDG) will spend the money to set up capacity building, professional development and training of the employees of two schools established by NDG. Mirre uses the proceeds to repair water pumps that have become out of order in ten villages in Burkina Faso. Finally, EducAIDed facilitates training for school staff in South Africa, so that the quality of education improves and growth can be achieved.
Nacht van de Fooi raised a huge amount last Saturday and brought development cooperation to the attention of the outgoing public in a positive way. The proceeds of this year are due to the efforts and enthusiasm of all volunteers, catering staff, catering visitors, sponsors and Impulsis.
