DIn the past five years, the number of beach pavilions in the Netherlands has increased from 396 to 413. In Groningen this number has remained the same at a total of 6. The increase is thus 4%, a growth that deviates positively from the negative development of the total beverage sector (-2%). Striking: The growth is largely caused by new pavilions in the non-coastal provinces. 9 pavilions were added (+41%), of which 4 companies in Gelderland alone.
Coastal development
Relatively speaking, the most beach pavilions have been added in the coastal provinces of Zeeland and North Holland in the past five years. In absolute numbers, the increase was greatest in North Holland (+6).
In the ten beach municipalities with the most beach pavilions in the Netherlands, 252 beach pavilions are located, an increase of 7% compared to five years ago. This number accounts for more than 60% of the total supply. Within the top 10, The Hague, Zandvoort and Veere remain the beach municipalities with the most pavilions. The municipality of Veere has experienced the strongest growth in the past five years. Here, the number increased by 6 beach pavilions to 30 locations (+25%). Almost half of the Zeeland offer is located in this popular touristic coastal municipality.
Heat wave
A successful year should have about 30 beautiful summer days, 2016 and especially 2018 were good years in terms of hours of sunshine. While a year has an average of approximately 80 warm, summer and tropical days, in 2018 the KNMI counted almost 120 of these days. With two heat waves it was good to stay along the beach. This made last year a difficult year for beach exploitations to beat.
Popular for foreigners
The coast is a popular place for many foreign tourists. According to the NBTC Holland Marketing, the coast was visited by 2017 million foreigners in 2,6. This is an increase of 12% compared to 2015.
Over the past 5 years, the number of overnight stays along the coast has increased by approximately 10% to more than 24 million. This is entirely due to a growth of the foreign segment (+30%, more than 45% of the total).
