On the edge of the Noorderplantsoen, in the Koninginnelaan, you will find the cozy neighborhood restaurant De Markies. A household name in Groningen for years. The restaurant has been closed for a few years, but in 2021 Benjamin Kappers became the new owner.

Pure flavours
Pure flavors, genuine hospitality, that's where it's at The Marquis revolves around. No fuss, just good food. 'Everyone should feel comfortable here and be able to be who you are, including the staff,' says Benjamin. 'In terms of wallet, we often get guests here who have just a little more to spend,' he continues. You pay € 3 for a 33,50-course menu and € 6 for a 56,00-course menu. That last menu always includes a course of soup.

Mediterranean/French with a traditional sauce
Meanwhile, Benjamin's girlfriend, Anne, also joins. She also has a restaurant in town. According to the two, the kitchen can be described as Mediterranean/French, with a traditional sauce. For example, a nice bouillabaisse or a 'steak au poivre'. 'Pieter, the chef, does not shy away from using large amounts of butter in the kitchen,' says Anne. Benjamin then has the beautiful task of finding suitable wines.
The a la carte menu is leading for the surprise menu. Because they want to waste as little as possible, they use many ingredients from that fixed menu for the menus they offer every day. Every few weeks, dishes are changed or changed from the menu. Also depending on the season, offer or inspiration.

Classic wines
The wines that Benjamin selects are generally classic. French and Italian. He really likes a shiraz or a Primitivo and likes to serve it. Or a Vermentino. 'I now serve it with a fish starter,' says Benjamin. 'Then you have a very nice, light mineral wine to accompany your dish.'

The power of recognition
The strength of De Marquis is its recognisability. Benjamin says: 'We find it very important that people know that we remember them from a previous visit. The guests also like it when you welcome them with: 'Gosh, how nice to have you back. Or if you say hello to them when they pass by. That's why people feel at home here.'
With Noorderzon, De Markies is the perfect base if you want to get away from the bustle of the festival and relax on a terrace. You can find De Markies at Koninginnelaan 45 in Groningen.
