The older young people among us probably all know it: Eetcafé and also bar The Warehouse in the city's entertainment street, the Peperstraat. If you don't know it's there, there's a good chance you'll pass it by. It is a bit hidden, at the back of an alley. A beautiful old warehouse that is over a hundred years old.
Artist's café
The building has a rich history. As a catering facility, it once started as an artists' café. And you can still feel that in the atmosphere there. It is alternative and cozy. When you enter, the first thing you notice is that it is not a large space, but that there are different floors, stairs and corners. If you immediately take the stairs up on the left, you will end up in the cafeteria part of the restaurant where there is room for a total of 80 guests. A colorful sight with colored wooden chairs and chalkboards on which the meal of the day and specialties are written. Hendrik Linnewiel has been the owner of Het Pakhuis since 2007.
Honest and affordable menu
'The approach of the café is to offer the most affordable and honest menu possible, organic where possible,' says Linnewiel. 'The majority is prepared in-house, in the kitchen at the very top of the building. Because the rooms are quite large, there is often room for groups who want to come and eat during the week. Many student associations, for example, that return regularly.'
"What the Warehouse is originally known for are the spare ribs," says the owner. 'We also pay a lot of attention to vegetarian dishes and we ensure that they are not neglected. The daily snacks vary daily. A few examples are rendang with rice or ratatouille. The price for a 3-course menu is €32,50. For this you will receive a tasting of starters, a main course from the menu and a tasting of desserts.'
Dansen
At the bottom is the bar with an attached dance area. The audience is generally slightly older than in the other establishments in Peperstraat. The age ranges from about 25+ to older, sometimes two generations, parents with children, who go out together.
They want to be distinctive through the music they play. 'Slightly less apres ski bar music than the rest of the nightlife. More a bit of Lowlands and 3FM-like music. Accessible but distinctive from the party cafes," says Linnewiel. They want to offer visitors a good atmosphere by hiring the right staff and ensuring an entertainment place where everyone feels safe.
The Warehouse is open daily from 17.30:XNUMX PM.
