You can eat the tastiest poke bowls here poke spot at the Gedempte Zuiderdiep in Stad. At least, that's what owner Jean-Paul Wu thinks. He brought the very first Hawaiian restaurant to Groningen in 2019. Comfort food in a bowl, that's basically it. But topped off with delicious fresh ingredients. And if you ask me, suitable for any time of the day.

Hawaiian invention
Many people still think that poke bowls come from Japan. But this popular dish originally originated as a snack among fishermen in Hawaii. This dish was a convenient way to use up leftover fish. Japanese immigrants brought the rice and soy sauce to Hawaii, creating this delicious blend of flavors.

Build your own bowl
There is a lot of choice at the Poké Spot. You can put together your own bowl entirely to your own taste. Wu explains: 'The base is usually rice, but it can also be a combination of rice and lettuce. Then you choose your protein, such as salmon, shrimp, tofu or chicken. A number of toppings are then added to complete the dish. Then you can think of avocado, edamame beans, cucumber or pickled radish. And finally you choose a sauce.' Poké Spot also offers a wide choice there, such as sesame soy or wasabi mayonnaise.
You can choose a small, medium or large version for the big appetite.

Choice stress
If you suffer from choice stress, there are also simply composite poke bowls that you can choose from. Then you just have to make a choice, it makes a difference.
Although the poke bowl is originally served with fish, Wu's absolute favorite is the Crispy Chili Chicken bowl. 'It comes with crispy chicken, edamame beans, corn, red pepper, fried onions and spicy sriracha mayonnaise.'

Fresh products
According to Wu, the strength of his business lies in the freshness of the products. 'We prepare everything fresh every day and we only work with the freshest ingredients. We make no concessions in this regard. So the fish you get here is really fresh. In principle, anyone can make such a poke bowl. But it's really about the proportions, the combination of flavors, the sauces and the freshness, which makes us actually the number one poke bowl business in Groningen.'

Besides the fact that you can sit relaxed inside, the restaurant also has a nice terrace and you can order to have it delivered to your home.
Poké Spot is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 a.m. to 21.00 p.m. For more information, go to www.pokespot.nl.
