beer room Cafe de Koffer in Groningen celebrates its twentieth anniversary on 26 February. Owner Ronny Heerink started his cafe in the Schildersbuurt in 1993. In the past twenty years, the café has developed from a neighborhood café with mainly regulars to a specialty beer café with more than 150 beers on the menu, where the same regulars from the first hour still feel at home. The whole week around the birthday of “de Koffer” will be dominated by the anniversary with various activities.
A special beer has been brewed in honor of this fourth lustrum. The brewer is chairman of the Groningen Beer Guild, Toon van den Broek. The label of this beer is designed by Hilda Groenesteyn, who is also responsible for the drawings for the Frisian and Groningen versions of Grimm's fairy tales. The anniversary beer will be presented to beer relations and beer enthusiasts on the pub's birthday, Tuesday 26 February.
Furthermore, a special beer tasting will be given on Wednesday 27 February by Rick Kempen, co-writer of the book "Less trammelant in Bierland". The theme of this tasting is Saison beers, a type of beer that few people know. There are also extensive drinks with the student volleyball association Veracles, of which “de Koffer” has been a sponsor and favorite pub for years, and at the weekend there is a party with guests of today and guests from then.
It is interesting to report that this cafe has never been bothered by the smoking ban, which is suddenly very topical. Smoking inside is, just like at the adjacent cafe Aunt Truus, immediately banned in July 2008. This to the satisfaction of even the smoking guests. That's another way to do it…
