At the Jenever & Gin festival on 23 and 24 June in the Der Aa church in Groningen, the five largest jenever distilleries in the Netherlands and dozens of small brands present themselves to enthusiasts and professionals alike.
The festival is part of Groninginnedag and is organized by Boilermaker en Mister Cocktail, who already twice organized the successful Gin Festival in Amsterdam. Bartender of the year 2015 and Hooghoudt Smaakmaker Lennart Deddens, will expose the art of mixology with a team of professional national and international bartenders. This happens behind an impressive must see show bar.
Dozens of types of gin and jenever are ready to be tasted; pure, in the mix or in a nice cocktail. During the festival, visitors will discover everything about the role of jenever in the cocktail bars and how this typically Dutch drink gets its characteristic taste. In the evening, discover the pop-up speakeasy bar on the water – for the real enthusiasts.
National pride
Once, a long time ago, in the Netherlands for the first time gin created. Originally it was drunk as a medicine, but this fine drink was soon enjoyed to the full. Later the English took over from us, by also distilling with juniper berries. They only used neutral alcohol, while gin is made from malt wine. That's how gin was born. We all know gin and the good news is that jenever is also making a worldwide comeback. Our national drink is now almost 400 years old. Once the most consumed drink in the world, now a revelation for the enthusiast.
