If the wine I recently rediscovered makes the front page of De Telegraaf as often as Estelle C.'s new love, then I'll go all out…and the sale too!
Chateau Lamartine Expression 2008, Cahors, France. The Cahors in the South West of France has become known for its strong, black wines. With the Cuvee Expression, Alain Gayreaud makes a very concentrated red wine from exclusively Cot grapes (better known as the Malbec grape). These come from his oldest vines which give a particularly low yield. After a long soaking for maximum extraction of color and flavors, the wine matures for 20 months in new oak barrels, of which 6 months with the bullage* technique known from Madiran. Here, tiny bubbles of oxygen are blown into the wine to soften the tannins. Only drank after 4 years of “captivity” in the bottle, but free from sharp edges but with full expression. And the wine can take a beating because it is the perfect accompaniment to beef (steak) or a very strong game dish. * And bullage I call in this case blowing out…..!
