Sint Maarten on November 11 and the following Saturday, Sinterklaas comes to delight our country every year with his visit, sweets and presents!
Tradition wants us to drink mulled wine around this period. Red wine, heated to a maximum of 70% (otherwise the alcohol will evaporate) and with the addition of cinnamon, cloves, star anise, orange peels and a little honey / sugar to taste. But the wine is less popular than 25 years ago, which is not surprising because we also have a lot more choice.
I would like to introduce a wine that we can drink as a modern replacement during the "2 spades" period. Chianti Classico by Duedi picche....freely translated indeed 2 spades. The Duedipicche vineyards are located just outside Sienna, in Castelina in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy. Chianti Classico has the highest Italian qualification DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). The Chianti Classico can often be recognized by the logo with the image of a black rooster, the Gallo Nero. This Gallo Nero only indicates that the producer is a member of the consortium of winegrowers in the Chianti Classico.
The winemaker of this Chianti Classico, made from 100% Sangiovese, has managed to maintain a good balance in quality and price. In this classic Chianti you will discover the right balance of flavors between fruit expression (berries, blackberries) and spices (laurel). Present persistent, but dry aftertaste. Very enjoyable wine with freshness and elegance. Combines well with many dishes, such as spicy pasta, lamb and beef, game and stews. Recommended outside of the meal with savory side dishes, such as hard cheeses or a variant of dry sausage. Those Italians know how to go far and want the best for the Bishops. Lovely evening.....
