Although employees in the catering industry experience a high workload, they are also among the healthiest workers in the Netherlands. This is evident from research by Vacancies.nl based on figures from the National Working Conditions Survey of the CBS (Central Statistical Office). More than 30% indicate that they are in very good health and 83% say they have no medical complaints. In comparison, only 23,7% of workers from other industries say they are in very good health.
High work pressure in the catering industry
Hospitality workers claim to have a job with a high workload, which is often caused by having to work quickly. They have less trouble with the amount of work they have to do and with the peak moments when they have to work extra hard. In addition, employees in the catering industry have less difficulty with their work than the average Dutch person.
Horeca costs a lot of power (and is sometimes dangerous)
As far as working conditions are concerned, it is noticeable that in the catering industry, people often have to deal with activities that require energy, involve noise and are dangerous from time to time. Small accidents often occur in the hospitality industry. Stab and cut wounds in particular are the order of the day, but burns are also mentioned by many catering employees. It is not without reason that research by SafetyNL shows that five thousand catering employees walk the road to the hospital every year.
Nice colleagues
It is pleasant in the hospitality industry, the employees of hotels, restaurants and cafes agree on that. They indicate that they consider the atmosphere in the workplace to be one of the most important aspects of a job. In addition, catering employees receive a lot of social support from supervisors and colleagues. The hospitality industry scores very well in terms of friendliness and support from colleagues. Colleagues are only found to be friendlier in education.
Average employee
The average employee in the hospitality industry is clearly younger than the average employee in the Netherlands. While the average employee in the Netherlands is a man aged approximately 45 to 55, the average catering employee is a woman aged 15 to 25.
