Last weekend, from 24 to 26 June 2016, the ZomerWelVaart summer festival attracted no fewer than 15.000 visitors to the quays in Groningen. With many ships passing through to DelfSail, the harbors and canals were well occupied with more than 100 different boats.
Since the well-known DelfSail this year starting on Wednesday June 29, there are many ships on the water in the run-up to the Sail event of the Netherlands. Groningen was a suitable stopover for many. Visitors to the event were given the opportunity to take a closer look at or inside many ships.
Music, art and food
The heart of SummerGoodbye was again located on the Hoge and Lage der A in the city center. Many ships were surrounded by music, art and food trucks. On Podium Z, various performances were given throughout the weekend by, among others, Haas, Moke and DJ Swoolish. On Sunday, the stage was dominated by young Groningen talents. Various food trucks provided a matching snack and drink during the summer festival; one could go there for sushi, barbecue, Asian spicy and French crêpes. Along the waters of the A and the Noorderhaven, local artists showed their works in various galleries and exhibition spaces along the 'Art Route'. The event was a party for the whole family, children were welcome at the Kidsplein.
Markt
The 30 stalls of the Rare Beautiful Market presented 'a market with all kinds of unique, original and handmade products, but also with other rarities such as creative reuse, vintage and retro items.' As the organization of ZomerWelVaart describes it. From illustrations to art and from accessories to bags and clothing; something for everyone.
Ships
The historic ships of Groningen again attracted a lot of attention. Over the past few days, people could go there for various activities.
At the Tromp, the program was adapted to DelfSail, the Stories of Groningen took over and filled in the program in an amusing way. On the ZK 4 Albatros, shipping enthusiasts were welcome to attend a shrimp peeling demonstration and to eat some fish. The Familie Trouw – the oldest ship in the province of Groningen, still in its original condition and still completely 'sailable' – was accessible for the rich history of stories of this ship. This weekend, the Nicolaas Mulerius set the stage for the history of Delfzijl and the surrounding area, the Citius contained a stage for shanty, seasongs and folk, and demonstrations of how to tie or fine nets were given on board the Feije.
Another amusing program of the ZomerWelVaart festival – derived from the WinterGoodbye – the organization looks back with satisfaction on the second edition of the festival.
