The well-known comedian Youp van 't Hek still expresses his love for the Groningen catering industry. At the end of 2013, he wrote in the foreword to the Groningen pub book: “Students, cafes, I am young and not yet tired. Groningen was founded for me. God how often I was there and usually bottomlessly happy!”
He recently became aware that Café 't Vaatje has taken place since last November in the basement of the building on the Grote Markt, where De Blauwe Engel was previously located. In his column of the VARA guide he wrote that he would like to take on the reopening of De Blauwe Engel.
No student bar is waiting for this sixties, but times are changing.
Despite the fact that the catering business now bears the name of 't Vaatje, the traces of De Blauwe Engel have not yet been completely erased. The blue neon letters of the facade are still in the possession of the current business.
Invitation
Owner of Café 't Vaatje, Jeroen de Vries, likes to invite Van 't Hek to visit his café. “In his column he wrote that there is no student bar that is still waiting for this sixty-year-old, but times are changing. We would like to invite Youp van 't Hek to our cafe and show him that 't Vaatje is also a great place to go out.”
The comedian then has the honor to unveil the neon lighting of De Blauwe Engel and, as they say, sing the song 'Nobody knows what time it is' one more time together with the café audience.
