The Municipality of Groningen has announced the Tropical Weather Scenario for Thursday 8 September. This means that the opening hours of the terraces on this day expanded and catering establishments are also allowed to put tables and chairs outside without a terrace permit.
When the KNMI indicates a weather forecast with an afternoon temperature above 27 degrees Celsius, the municipality can allow longer opening hours for terraces. The municipality's catering inspectors determine whether the Tropical Weather Scenario (TWS) applies.
Groningen arrangement
The TWS means that catering entrepreneurs can keep their terraces open for one hour longer. For catering establishments located within the Diepenring, the terraces may be open until 03:00 am. For business outside the deep ring, that is until 02:00 a.m. Furthermore, they are allowed to put the patio chairs outside already at 11:00 in the morning in a larger area than normal.
For catering entrepreneurs without a terrace permit, they can also put tables and chairs outside in the coming days, provided the passage for pedestrians is not hindered.
